StopKillingYourSelf™ Asian-Indian Nutrition Program

The Problem:
According to studies by Dr. Anita Chopra M.D., FACP, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Dr. Kannayiram Alagiakrishnan, M.D., University of Alberta, Canada:

  • Asian Indian men in the U.S. have a high prevalence of coronary heart disease and diabetes… The prevalence of coronary artery disease is three times higher in Asian Indian women than in women in the U.S. as a whole.

  • In India, only one in 40 women gets breast cancer, but in United States, one out of every eight Asian Indian women will get the disease, the highest incidence in the world. Asian Indian women are at a high risk for osteoporosis or thinning of bones.

According to Anurag Varma, Legislative Director, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) “…diabetes among Americans of Indian descent is two- to three-fold higher than the general U.S. population and coronary artery disease up to four times higher.” Most Asian Indians, especially the vegetarians, believe that they are eating a healthy diet, but up to 40% of their calories come from fat (8% saturated fat). Indian snacks are loaded with unhealthy fats, refined flour, added sugar, and sodium. The Asian Indian community at large continues to ignore these problems with devastating results.

SpicesThe Solution:
This program is designed to help Asian Indians go from poor nutrition to healthy nutrition habits. The recipes are based on high quality low-fat proteins, whole grains, health promoting oils, immune system supporting herbs and spices, and high fiber fresh fruits and vegetables. Many dishes draw their inspiration from the Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean, and Spanish cuisines. As you begin to prepare and enjoy these dishes, you will gradually move away from the high sugar, high sodium, calorie rich, low nutrition foods deeply imbedded in the Asian Indian diet.
